It started out as a challenge and turned into the biggest event in the world for Midgets. The Belleville Midget Nationals started at the Belleville High Banks in Belleville, Kan., after some racers involved in a 1977 challenge race kicked around the idea among themselves. High interest was shown in the track by the drivers during the Rocky Mountain Midget vs. St. Louis Midget Challenge race. With the interest in the track by the drivers and a lack of a true national race for Midgets, the Belleville Midget Nationals was born when AIMS Promoter Mitch Miller brought it to life by sanctioning the Belleville Midget Nationals in 1978.
The first Belleville Midget Nationals held in 1978 turned out to be the beginning of an event that the Fair Amusements Board had hoped for with big names, fast cars and a lot of action. Some of the big names that were on hand for this premier event were Stan Fox, Larry Patton, Randy Roberts, Casey Slocum, Mike Gregg, Ron ‘Sleepy’ Tripp, Bob Wente, Gary Patterson, Jeff Heywood, Bruce Field and eventual champion, Eddie Jackson. Mitch Miller promoted the Midget Nationals for the first 17 years before USAC came in on the 1996 Midget Nationals. USAC is currently the sanctioning body of the Midget Nationals.
As the nation’s most prestigious event of the year for Midgets, America’s top owners and drivers trek to Kansas each year for the historic event. The Belleville Midget Nationals is a one-of-a-kind event that brings the best equipment and best drivers to the nation’s richest Midget race in the country.

Belleville Midget Nationals Milestones: 1978 - The one-lap track record for the very first Belleville Midget Nationals saw Stan Fox set the record time of 20.18 seconds. 1981 - The Belleville Midget Nationals gets the top headline on the front page of National Speed Sport News: "Gregg Top Belleville Midgeteer". 1982 - Ken Schrader made his first visit to Belleville, but was not allowed to participate because he had aluminum heads on his engine which did not conform to the rules. Rather than change motors, he left the track without completing a lap. 1983 - Rich Vogler and Mel Kenyon made their only appearances at the Belleville Midget Nationals ... Ken Schrader returned and finished third in the Championship Feature ... Officials suggested starting Thursday, Friday and Saturday features three-abreast. This was voted a with a unanimous "NO" at the drivers meeting ... Johnny Parsons Jr. was called in at the last minute to fill the seat for the injured Bob East and went on to win the Championship Feature. 1984 - Saturday's Championship race had a record 28 cars start the feature, with 24 cars finishing the race despite the grueling 40 laps. 1985 - A record car count for the Belleville Midget Nationals with a total of 84 cars and drivers in attendance. 1987 - John Andretti got a call on Saturday night from an IndyCar team and had to leave Belleville on Sunday morning to prepare for his first IndyCar race and missed the rain-delayed Championship Feature on Sunday. 1988 - The Cosworth engine was a dominant force, winning the Championship Feature and taking seven of the top-10 finishing positions in the Championship Feature. 1989 - A special race was added this year called the "Dash for Cash". This was a race for all drivers with cars with less powerful engines to race against each other of equal strength. Dean Ward won the $400 prize. 1990 - On August 4, Jeff Gordon won on his 19th birthday and pocketed the $7,000 top prize in the most dominating Championship Feature perfomance in history. He lapped every car but runner-up Steve Knepper, whom he trailed by a car-length at the checkered flag. 1992 - Chris Economaki, publisher of National Speed Sport News, made his first and only trip to the Belleville Midget Nationals ... Prime Sports filmed the race that year for their program Chevy Motor Sports Hour. 1993 - It was Tony Stewart's first visit to Belleville in the Ralph Potter V-6. Stewart was only able to manage a 22nd-place finish. It was also the first time for 16-year-old J.J Yeley of Phoenix, driving his dad’s midget. Yeley did not make the Championship Feature. 1995 - Twelve different States and Australia were represented in the Championship Feature field, with 18 different engine combinations and 17 different chassis combinations. This was extraordinary because there were only 39 entrants this year. 1998 - The one-lap track record of 17.502 seconds is set by Jason Leffler, which would not be broken until 11 years later by Cole Whitt. 2000 - Sarah McCune made her first visit to Belleville and finished 20th in the Championship Feature as the first female driver to make the "big dance." 2002 - Mopar puts up a $12,500 bonus if the winner of the Championship Feature utilizes a Mopar engine. Dave Darland's winning Ford-powered Beast kept Mopar's money safe. 2003 - J.J. Yeley sets the USAC single-season feature victory record by scoring his 20th win of the 2003 season in Thursday night's Preliminary Feature at Belleville. Yeley surpassed the previous record of 19 set by A.J. Foyt in 1961 and tied in 1988 by Ron ‘Sleepy’ Tripp and in 2000 by Jay Drake. 2004 - Adam Clarke finished in 10th in the Championship Feature, making him the highest-finishing Australian driver in Belleville Midget Nationals history. 2006 - Mopar becomes the title sponsor and the winner of the Championship Feature was won by a Mopar engine. Also, this was the first year that the Championship Feature paid $1,000 to start. 2007 - A Mopar engine won again as Mopar was the title sponsor of the 30th Annual Belleville Midget Nationals. Michael Pickens of New Zealand became the highest finishing international driver with his 7th place finish. 2008 - Speedway Motors signs a three-year deal to become title sponsor of the Belleville High Banks and Belleville Midget Nationals. 2009 - A normally sweltering hot Belleville had unusually cool summertime temperatures in the mid-70s that made the racing surface fast. Cole Whitt sets the 1-lap Midget track record of 17.500 seconds on Thursday night while Brad Sweet records the fastest-ever 8-lap time of 2:19.41 on Saturday. 2010 - For the first time in more than a decade, the Belleville Midget Nationals were not sanctioned by USAC. The car count for the unsanctioned event grew by 3 over the previous season's sanctioned race. 2011 - RevHoney is named the title sponsor of the 34th Annual Belleville Midget Nationals.
Driver and car owner quotes:
"Every one tells you all these stories that scare you ... that they got these numbers on the turns because you don't know where you are. And it's true. You don't know where you are. Comin' into (turn) three you need to look at what's going on coming out of four or else you'll be in trouble." - Ricky Gray
"She's like the Daytona for Midgets. She's pretty awesome. They said it has a little bit of a straightaway down the front but I haven't found it yet. You gotta to know who you are racing with because one little bobble can cost you some time of a car or anything else." - Brad Noffsinger
"It's not like anything I had been to before. It's kind of an egg-shaped 'D' the way I look at it. I'd heard how high-banked and fast it was and they weren't lying. It's kind of a harder track to pass on because it is so fast. I think even the slower guys are pretty quick here. You've gotta really be sharp to do any passing. Everybody just said they run it up against the fence so I figured we could handle that part of it." - Jack Hewitt
"There's probably only a hundred feet of straight straightaway down the front but the backstraight is pretty much just a big sweeping curve. If you don't have respect for this race track, it's gonna bite you." - Greg Vernetti
"There's no resting at Belleville," says Indy 500 Veteran and defending Nationals Champion, Johnny Parsons,Jr . "It's a driver's track. It's not like a mile or a flat half-mile track where you can rest on the straightaways. At Belleville, you're always running right up by the guardrail and you have to drive the car.. You can't let up. There isn't a straightaway where you can rest." - Johnny Parsons Jr.
"I mean everybody who was anybody was at Belleville, and they had their best cars ready to go there. It was a great race for me to win. I was on a tear there, running wide open and jumping the cushion and never lifting. I never stopped racing like that until the checkered flag flew." - Jeff Gordon
"To win Belleville means everything to me. People speak of the Midget Nationals with great respect and when you say you won, then you can say it with a special sense of pride." - Car Owner Larry Howard
"The first time I went to Belleville, I took two midgets out there. I'm standing in the infield and those cars started whipping around that place so fast that it made the hair stand up on the back of my neck! It gave me the chills. I've never had a racetrack do that." - Car Owner Mike Sala
"To me, winning Belleville is like watching Dale Earnhardt winning the Daytona 500. Belleville is so much fun to go to. The atmosphere is second to none. I just can't put it into words what it meant to win that race." - Jerry Coons Jr.
